Nike Unveils Latest Running Shield Pack Collection

Introducing high-performance gear designed for the country’s extreme weather conditions

Southeast Asia faces its annual wet and cool season through the monsoon months, with the highest rainfall at the end of every year. Running in the rain can be an exhilarating experience, but it can be dangerous as well. Wet tracks reduces grip, and reduces visibility.

The rain should not deter runners from their runs, and this Holiday ’12 season, Nike introduces products to keep runners dry, protected and comfortable.

Breathability, ventilation and comfort come together in the NIKE RELAY tops (men’s and women’s). The Nike Dri-FIT knit fabric enables premium sweat management, while ergonomic seaming with flat-seam construction follows the body’s natural contours for reduced irritation, a flattering fit and a full range of motion. Mesh underarm panels and the dropped and vented hem augment the cool comfort. The NIKE RELAY top features reflective elements as well, keeping the runner visible in the dark. A reflective headphone cord loop at the back of the neck also means runners can listen to their music without distractions.

NIKE TWISTED TEMPO shorts for women pack high-performance features into stylish and comfortable running shorts, available in a wide range of color combinations with contrasting diagonal panels. The Nike Dri-FIT fabric and built-in Dri-FIT crepe liner helps keep runners dry. A zipper pocket provides secure storage for a small media player.

The NIKE SHIELD PACK– a collection of running footwear to suit each unique running style –is  updated with the Nike Shield technology, igniting runners every day and night of this season no matter rain or shine. It features a highly reflective inner sleeve that performs triple duty—it’s reflective even in dim light for safety; it makes a barrier that resists water in wet conditions, but stays breathable; and the reflectivity adds some flash to the look.

The Shield Pack collection consists of the NIKE FREE RUN+ 3 SHIELD, NIKE LUNARECLIPSE+ 2 SHIELD and NIKE PEGASUS+ 29 SHIELD.

So in this wet, rainy season, there is no reason not to continue running.

FOOTWEAR

NIKE LUNARGLIDE+ 4 SHIELD
Men

The Nike LunarGlide+4 Shield delivers an ideal blend of lightweight cushioning and support with the winter protection of Shield. Designed for every runner, this style has been updated for cold, wet weather with the Nike Shield Pack. A reflective inner sleeve creates a barrier that resists water without compromising breathability and stays visible in low-light conditions while adding some flash to the look.

Nike Lunarlon and Flywire technologies combine for exceptional comfort and an adaptive, glove-like fit in a lightweight package. Nike’s Dynamic Support system provides the stability runners need without the added weight. Deep Nike Natural Motion Engineering flex grooves along the midsole and outsole encourage flexibility for a smooth, efficient stride, and BRS 1000 carbon rubber in the heel adds durability in this high-wear area.

NIKE LUNARGLIDE+ 4 SHIELD
Women

The popular Nike LunarGlide+4 Shield has been modified for inclement weather with the Nike Shield Pack. Runners still find the great fit and excellent blend of cushioning and support in a lightweight package, but the updates allow for training no matter rain, cold or dark. The highly reflective inner sleeve performs triple duty—it’s reflective even in dim light for safety; it makes a barrier that resists water in wet conditions, but stays breathable; and the reflectivity adds some flash to the look.

Nike’s innovative Lunarlon cushioning offers a lightweight, smooth ride, Dynamic Support adds comfortable stability and the dynamic Nike Flywire technology adds a customizable, glove-like fit.

NIKE FREE RUN+ 3 SHIELD
Men

The men’s Nike Free Run+ 3 Shield combines the benefits of natural motion with special protection from the rain and the cold. A Nike-exclusive BW2 mesh allows for a no-sew bond, increasing water resistance and providing a lightweight ride, and its weatherized finish keeps the foot dry without compromising breathability. Reflective overlays keep the runner visible and stylish.

Nike Dynamic Fit technology wraps the foot for a glove-like feel and the customizable laces accommodate a variety of arches, while the whole lacing system is offset to help reduce pressure on the top of the foot. Flex grooves and diagonal cuts along the length and width of the midsole enhance flexibility and natural motion and help increase foot strength.

NIKE FREE RUN+ 3 SHIELD
Women

Women can experience the foot strengthening benefits of natural motion with added winter weather protection. The Nike Free Run+ 3 Shield uses lightweight Nike-exclusive BW2 mesh that allows for a no-sew bond to increase water resistance. The weatherized finish helps the feet stay dry and highly-reflective overlays keep them visible and stylish during runs in the dark.

Nike Dynamic Fit technology wraps around the arch for a glove-like feel and customizable fit and the low-profile, Phylite midsole provides a resilient ride and doubles as an outsole, reducing the overall weight.

NIKEAir Pegasus+ 29 SHIELD
Men

Find the cushioning and smooth ride preferred by neutral runners with added winter protection in this adaption of a legendary Nike running shoe. The Nike Air Pegasus+29 Shield uses breathable mesh with a weatherized finish. The highly reflective skin bonded to the backside of the mesh also improves water resistance and remains visible in low-light conditions, while adding some flash to the look.

NIKEAir Pegasus+ 29 SHIELD
Women

The long beloved Nike Air Pegasus running shoe has been updated with winter running protection. The Nike Air Pegasus+ 29 Shield for women delivers the cushioning and smooth ride that neutral runners want with water resistant mesh to help keep the feet dry. A highly reflective skin bonded to the backside of the mesh further enhances water resistance, and ensures visibility in low-light conditions, while adding some flash to the look.

The welded, ultra-lightweight underlay wrapping the forefoot delivers flexible support while the internal heel counter means a snug and secure fit. The Nike Zoom unit in the heel adds comfort underfoot.

Race and explore in Run BGC 2012

Run BGC, Bonifacio Global City’s (BGC) annual running event, is all set to make footrace buffs challenge themselves anew in a race to cross BGC’s epic finish line.

This year’s Run BGC has four categories, offered with male and female classifications: 500m Kiddie Race, 5K Special Route with Fun Tasks, 10K, and 15K. The race for children is sub-divided into 5-8 years old and 9-12 years old categories.

In a race dubbed, “Ready, Set, Explore!”, runners will enjoy a route that will take them to explore some of BGC’s top attractions – like the interactive parks, playfield, and The Mind Museum. Making it more memorable are the fun challenges along the way. The 5K category has this “explore” route with pit stops that require runners to complete various tasks required to finish the race.

Cash prizes, trophies, exciting premium product packs, and gift certificates await the top three placers of each category. All race finishers will receive a loaded finisher’s kit and the competition’s biggest contingent will get a special award.

But more than that, all finishers, in all distance categories, will qualify to join a raffle draw with a grand prize of Asian cruise for 2 persons courtesy of High Street South. The cruise will take the lucky BGC runner to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia via Singapore before heading to Phuket, Thailand, then back to Singapore. Prize is convertible to P150, 000.00 cash but non-transferable.

Run BGC Ready, Set, Explore! is on November 25, Sunday at 4am. All categories start at 34th Ave., Bonifacio Global City, Taguig (near Mercato Centrale).

Run United Goes The 42Km Distance

Finally, one of the most-popular running series, Run United is going for a full marathon, as it added 42km to its race categories. And the running community is giving the new 'mary' in town its full support.

There are marathons, then there's the Run United Philippine Marathon (RUPM). Everyone is excited to participate in newest addition to the country's running calendar that will go on a debut run on October 28.

RUPM, besides being the first marathon jointly organized by ULAH & RunRio, is set to create milestones for participants.

Runners will surely get a memorable start and finish at Run United Philippine Marathon--complete with red carpet, marching bands, exclusive finish arc, colorful balloons, video/photo shots, and the other surprises.

"We want to make sure that participants will not only remember how well organized our events are, we want their participation in our events memorable too by providing them the best race experience possible," said Panlilio.

According to Panlilio, "We cater to all types of runners, including progressive and elite runners. RUPM is our way of helping them level up to more challenging distances."

RUPM will also be high on nationalistic touches to celebrate Filipino sportsmanship. Philippine miniature flags will be given to all participants crossing the finish line. The design of the limited edition race singlet also depicts Filipino pride.

There will be separate categories for Filipino and foreign winners, to give credit or recognition to more runners.

The Unilab Active Health Village will also be part of the Run United Philippine Marathon experience. It will be classified in four categories: Active Kids Zone, Health, Sports, & Leisure, Runners’ Lounge and iConnect.

RUPM will also feature short and medium distance categories— the Ceelin 500m dash, Hydrite 3k, Dolfenal 5k, Enervon HP Recovery 10k, Alaxan FR 21k with the highlight, Enervon Activ 42k.

All categories except for 42k and 21k will have start and finishline at the SM Mall of Asia while 42k and 21k will start at Bonifacio Global City and finish at SM Mall of Asia.

42K runners will get to run in three cities: Taguig, Makati and Pasay

Online registration is already closed.

In-store registration is until October 26, 2012 at the following outlets:
  • Riovana BGC – 28th St. cor. 9th Ave., Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City
  • Riovana Katipunan – 3rd floor Regis Bldg. Katipunan, Quezon City.
  • Toby's SM Mall of Asia – Ground Floor Entertainment Hall
  • Toby's Trinoma
Registration fees are as follows:
  • 500m – P350
  • 3K – P600
  • 5K – P700
  • 10K – P800
  • 21K – P900
  • 42K – P1,300
The race kit will contain the following: limited edition RUPM singlet, bib number, and wrist tags for 500m dash participants and will be available upon registration.

RUPM is part of the ULAH running series. Run United started with only 6,000 runners when it was launched in March 2010 and the numbers have steadily grown in succeeding events. An estimated 12,000 runners participated during its previous race—at Run United 3.

Run United 1 on March 4 started off this year’s RunRio Trilogy, followed by Run United 2 on June 17. Besides the run races, Unilab Active Health also has a triathlon series, the third leg, Tri United 3, will be held on November 11 at Ayala, Alabang.

For further information or inquiries on race details, results, photos and discussions, please visit the following websites: www.unilabactivehealth.com or www.runrio.com

The highlight of the event is the huge medal, that will serve as a base plate of the previously earned three-piece medals from the RU series. Of course there are the loot bags and finisher shirts that will be given away to every finisher after he crosses the finish line. But the organizers added some wonders to the event during race day.
  • 990+ Security personnel scattered along the course from BGC to MOA.
  • Hydration stations spanning every 1.5 to 2 kilometers.
  • Red-carpet finish line for the 42K runners.
  • Miniature Philippine flags will be given to runners before crossing the finish line.
  • Cowbells to boost you up as you sprint your last breath towards the finish line.
  • Free massage, day care center and iconnect wi-fi station at the Unilab Active Health Village.
Here are some reminders that should be strictly enforced for our own safety and for much more organized and happier event:
  • Please come on-time. Fifteen (15) minutes after the gun-time, late participants will no longer be allowed to run. Whether you have prepared for this race or not, getting at the starting line (not just getting to the finish line) before the gun-time should be one of your primary target.
  • Don't minimize the trash, but completely eliminate littering. 6-meters long of trash bins are located at each hydration stations, so please be sure to shoot those cups, banana peels, and empty energy packs.
  • No bandits! Non-registered pacer even if you have your own nutrition/hydration system are also not allowed along the course, and much more to the finish line.
  • Hoarding? Races are not there as a venue to collect finisher's loots, hydrations, nor medals. Each registered runner is allotted only with one finisher's shirt, one post-hydration powerade/water, and one medal. There is also only one finish line for each category, that means each runner must cross the finish line only once, and claim a finisher's medal only once. Please do not hoard, be considerate to other runners who have also participated and have not yet claimed their own.
  • Do not cause bottle-necking at and near the finish line. Even you wanted to cross the finish line without anyone blocking your way. So please "do unto others what you want others do unto you."
And finally, 2 lanes including the service road will be provided for the runners as we traverse the stretch of C5 Road from Market Market to Bayani Road. Only one lane will be allowed to motorists that is separated by an extra lane for Runrio's equipment that will be deployed.

See you at the staring line. Good luck and have fun!

The Trails Of The Mount Pinatubo 50K Ultra Challenge

There were 102 runners who answered the gun start during the 3rd Mount Pinatubo 50Km Ultra Trail Run last October 21, 2012. An annual event by the Bald Runner Events, it starts and finish at Sta. Juliana, Capas, Tarlac tracing an out-and-back route over the lahar-filled river basin. The turn around point being the crater of Mount Pinatubo, some 900 feet above sea level.

Mount Pinatubo (wikipedia) is an active stratovolcano located on the island of Luzon. It is located in the Cabusilan Mountains separating the west coast of Luzon from the central plains. Before the volcanic activities of 1991, its eruptive history was unknown to most people. It was heavily eroded, inconspicuous and obscured from view. It was covered with dense forest which supported a population of several thousand indigenous people, the Aetas, who fled to the mountains during the Spanish conquest of the Philippines.

The volcano's eruption on June 15, 1991 produced the second largest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century. Complicating the eruption was the arrival of Typhoon Yunya bringing a lethal mix of ash and rain. Successful predictions at the onset of the climactic eruption led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from the surrounding areas, saving many lives, but the surrounding areas were severely damaged by pyroclastic flows, ash deposits, and subsequently, by the lahars caused by rainwaters re-mobilizing earlier volcanic deposits destroying thousands of infrastructures and altering the river systems months to years after the eruption.

Here, let me take you towards the crater and back with the series of photos that I took during my run. I usually document my run in a narrative way (will be on my other post) but the photos will best describe how I witnessed the beauty of the surrounding that I am into. Let's go.

Ultra runners at the starting line, as we listen to the RD's race briefing.
At day break, I started to shoot, as we set foot on the lahar-filled route.
Just one of the many river crossings that we are about to traverse.
The first aid station, 4x4 vehicles that carried our fuel.
Green-clad lahar facade. One of the many along the course.
Heading deeper and into the gorge.
Lahar-filled route seemed so endless. The river reflects the color of the sky.
A 4x4 tour vehicle showing her might in crossing the river.
Can you see the 4x4 vehicle? Imagine how tall are these walls.
Ever changing surrounding. From green to clay to snow-like wall appearance.
We shared the route with those tourists where 4x4s can't go beyond.
From lahar bed to pebbles and boulders. From soft cushion to jagged edges.
The sign tells it all. Where do you belong?
After the ascending trail, we reached our destination.
We scampered towards the crater upon seeing the magnificent lake.
Here it is, the magnificent crater lake. Cheers!
God's wonder. Can you spot the emitting smoke, it's scary but it's not.
A closer look. Can't resist to touch the water so we dipped our weary self.
A father and son, resting on a makeshift shed. Lead runners are upfront.
Pebbles roll down along with the current. A refreshing view as we cross  the streams.
The last aid station, where I took refuge. Sweet potatoes were my lunch.
The last stretch of the lahar route. No water this time around.
Not far ahead is Sta. Juliana, the finish line of the race.
Civilization greeted us upon crossing this last river.
As we head into the warm welcome of friends at the finish line.

Saucony Kinvara 3 Debuts

After a successful launch of the Saucony Kinvara 3 in Manila last October 12, 2012, I am now eager to try a new pair of this new innovation - light shoes from Saucony. As we took a glimpse of the new shoes during dinner, I was too excited to try it for a spin. And I just did. I tried it on a treadmill just after the dinner and fell in love with it. I am presently using racing flats during my training runs and races, including trail running, and this just came in time. I am now appreciating the benefits of midfoot to forefoot running and is savoring the pain that they bring after every run. Talk about being a hardcore runner, huh, although I am just not. I wish a new pair of the Kinvara 3 will find a place in my shoe cabinet soon. If I am wearing a combination of black and green racing pair during the upcoming RU Philippine Marathon, (you guessed it right) my wish had been granted.

Here is the press release from Kinvara.

Industry's Most Highly Anticipated Shoe of the Season is now in the Philippines

Today, Saucony unveils the all-new Kinvara 3, the industry’s most highly anticipated shoe of the season and the third update to the brand’s award-winning natural motion running shoe. Saucony continues to inspire runners to find their personal “strong” through running with the much-anticipated arrival of Kinvara 3. The all-new Kinvara 3 is the third edition of the iconic Kinvara, a minimalist shoe that is renowned for being lightweight and highly responsive.

“Of all the shoes released by Saucony, runners and retailers are especially excited by the new Kinvara 3,” said Chris Lindner, chief marketing officer for Saucony. “The Kinvara was among the first natural motion running shoes available in the marketplace and positioned Saucony as an industry leader in the category. The Kinvara 3, an even better technical running shoe than its predecessors, delivers more than a great shoe: It inspires an incredible running experience. People just can’t wait to get it on and go.”

Saucony is a top name in running, an authentic performance footwear brand. Throughout the years, Saucony has become legendary with its trailblazing innovations and cutting-edge technological expertise, including pioneering the minimalist shoe category – the buzz in the running community today.

Kinvara 3: So Much Technology, So Little Shoe

The next-generation Kinvara, weighing only 7.7 ounces (based on a men’s size 9), is a performance training shoe with a 4mm heel-to-toe offset that positions the runner’s foot during impact in a way that creates a greater range of motion than traditional running shoes (with a 12mm heel-to-toe offset) for the Gastrocnemius-Soleus-Achilles tendon system, allowing for a more powerful running stride.

Saucony has taken the Kinvara 3 to a whole new level with a precision engineered upper that is lighter and more flexible thanks to FlexFilm™ technology, a lightweight, highly dynamic flexible film affixed onto the breathable mesh upper that secures and stabilizes the foot throughout the gait cycle. Memory Foam heel pods in the collar ensure an ultra-secure ride.

Saucony’s high abrasion EVA exposed foam midsole allows for lightweight protection underfoot, while maximizing rebound and flexibility. After studying wear patterns on thousands of test shoes, Saucony adjusted the outsole design on the new Kinvara 3 to increase durability and promote an even smoother transition. XT-900 carbon rubber pods were strategically placed on parts of the Kinvara 3’s outsole for enhanced durability without adding weight. The reengineered outsole includes a beveled heel to better facilitate a natural rolling movement from heel to toe.

About the Award-Winning Kinvara

The Saucony Kinvara, launched in early 2010, has been recognized with numerous industry awards including: “Best Debut” (Runner’s World magazine, Summer 2010); “Gear of the Year” (Outside magazine, Fall/Winter 2010); “Best Shoe in the Performance Category” (The Running Network, Fall 2010); “Best Debut” (Endurance Sports Media Group, Fall 2010); “Best Buy”- Kinvara 2 (Runner’s World Awards 2011);“Best Update”- Kinvara 3 (Runner’s World UK 2012), among others.

Distribution outlets

The Kinvara 3 is available in specialty run retailers and major department stores nationwide.

Nike's We Run Manila 2012

Nike's We Run Race Series Returns To Manila
We run MNL 10K inspires and connects runners globally with Nike+

Here is the Press Release from Nike PH.

Philippines, October 2012 - Nike We Run returns to Manila for a second year, to inspire, motivate and connect runners around the world. On December 2, 2012, Filipino runners will be part of the global We Run race movement, which will see a total of 395,500 runners from 34 cities participating - establishing a new global community of runners through Nike’s most connected race series using the innovative Nike+ technology. The We Run race series kicked off on September 1 in Prague, Czech Republic, and will conclude on December 15 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Nike’s We Run Manila 10K race will energize the streets of Pasay City with the 13,000 high-octane runners expected to make tracks all over the SM Mall of Asia’s grounds. Set against the remarkable view of Manila Bay, the initial stretch of the race will let runners pass through the commercialized area of the Mall of Asia with the SMX Convention Center and the latest icon of the area, the eye-shaped SM Bay City Arena. Runners are set to leave urban commercial scenery and head towards the fields along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard. Closing in on the halfway point of the race, runners will then pass the upcoming Belle Casino, a gold complex glistening in the morning sun. As they take a turn on Pacific Avenue and race past the same landmarks, runners will come upon the iconic ferris-wheel along Seaside Boulevard that marks the final kilometer to the finish line. The panoramic run would not be complete without an engaging en route entertainment featuring some of Manila’s top musical acts.

Meeting the runners at the finish line is the Race Village that will offer an array of services. Runners can expect to be pampered with massage booths and get recharged at any of the refreshment stalls while being entertained by the energetic musical line-up.

“Nike’s We Run race is the celebration of running across the world, the culmination of every runner’s dedication and commitment to train harder, defy expectations and push their bodies’ limits. Nike aims to revolutionize the running experience, by allowing runners to inspire, motivate and connect with other runners globally through the Nike+ Technology”, shared Sanjay Gangopadhyay, Marketing Director of Nike South East Asia. “With the second edition of the We Run race in Manila, Nike envisions Filipinos, the youth in particular, to further move the local running scene forward by leading the active lifestyle movement.”

This year, Nike is taking inspiration to a new level as runners will be able to follow two of Philippines most popular lifestyle bloggers, Robbie Becroft of robbieoffduty.com and Lissa Kahayon of lissakahayon.com who will be embarking on their first We Run race. Follow their We Run journey as they take on the challenge of preparing for Nike’s We Run MNL 10K race, blogging at each step of the journey, and witness how Nike elevates their everyday running experience with the various product offerings including the Nike+ ecosystem.

To get race-ready, Nike will organize four training sessions focusing on proper running techniques and tips. Runners will also be able to test out the Nike+ Running app (available on iOS and Android), and try out the season’s latest running products. These clinics will be led by podiatrists and Nike Training Club instructors to further educate individuals on how they can reach their potential as runners.

The registration for Nike’s We Run race will commence on Monday, October 8 2012 online through www.facebook.com/NikeRunningPH and also on-ground at selected retail stores. Registration details are as follows:
